Le bassin de dissipation d’énergie joue un rôle très important pour la sécurité du barrage et la protection de l’environnement contre les inondations à l’aval du barrage,il permet de dissiper l’énergie potentielle crée par le barrage avec le passage de la crue extrême sur le déversoir,et de régulariser de manière naturelle et avec une grande sécurité le déversement ou l’élévation du plan d’eau sur la crête du déversoir et réduire la vitesse de l’écoulement à une valeur compatible avec la stabilité du lit de la rivière.
Le problème de dimensionnement des bassins de dissipation d’énergie classique réside dans la détermination des paramètres nécessaires pour le dimensionnement de cet structure.
Les méthodes de dimensionnement du bassin de dissipation d'énergie classique sont partielles, lentes, indirectes, incomplètes basées sur le procédé d'approximation , ce qui les rend souvent non adaptées à l'objectif assigné parla réalité du terrain
