bridge: a story
the first bridges were girder bridges, often simple structures based on a tree trunk or a wooden board, a very basic concept that has existed since prehistoric times. is that during antiquity develop what became known as the modern techniques of building bridges.the Romans in fact perfected the art of arched bridges and built in all regions of the empire. they built not only very simple one vaulted arch bridges, but also multi-arched bridges, even on multiple levels of arches, making it the strongest structures.This is why many bridges then are still standing today.
in the 12th century, the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire have their busy around the construction and maintenance of bridges all around Europe, to allow Catholic priests to move easily in the countryside. in France, there was even an ecclesiastical order,the "brethren of the bridge," dedicated to the design and construction of bridges. the French church decorated bridges with statues of saints and chapels where travelers could rest and pray. and these chapels bridges are in fact precursors tollbooths found on our existing bridges.
