L’Écosse a été un pays indépendant

L’Écosse a été un pays indépendant jusqu’en 1707, plus ou moins. À partir du 16e siècle, les choses se sont un peu compliquées, notamment avec l’accession simultanée de James I aux trônes d’Angleterre et d’Écosse. Malgré cela, de fait, les deux pays restent distincts, même si l’Écosse est depuis fort longtemps un état en quelque sorte vassal de son énorme voisin anglais. Ce n’est toutefois qu’en 1707, donc, que les deux couronnes sont officiellement réunies, avec le traité puis l’Acte d’Union. Reste que cette union est contestée par beaucoup d’écossais dès le début du 18e siècle, les signataires de l’acte ayant « vendu » le pays à l’Angleterre étant accusés d’avoir été corrompus pour accepter le traité.
